Few things have adversely affected the nation and the world more than the COVID-19 pandemic. The coronavirus has put millions of people out of work, and even worse, has killed thousands of people, and that number only continues to rise. In short, the coronavirus has affected all walks of life and all businesses.

For crane operators who still need to go to work each day during these trying times, what can you do to  stay safe and help prevent the spread of the disease? Here are a few tips to consider when serving as a crane operator during the COVID-19 pandemic.

• Closely follow the guidelines set forth by health officials, especially the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). This would include important advice such as to wash your hands thoroughly or use hand sanitizer often; avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, ears, and mouth with unwashed hands; and keep a safe distance of at least 6 feet away from others when possible.
• Host meetings digitally. Use facetime or another (currently) free service such as zoom or Microsoft Teams to discuss plans, obstacles or other information pertinent to the job.
• Sanitize the inside of the crane. Even if you’re using gloves, it will still be wise to wipe down and sanitize the areas that are commonly touched. You should do this more than you previously did and at least daily.
• If you’re sick, even if you just feel a bit under the weather, stay home to avoid possibly spreading the disease.

These are just a few simple steps crane operators can take to stay safe and help prevent the disease from spreading. Hopefully, we’ll soon be back swinging cranes in peace and not worrying nonstop about catching this awful disease in public.
